Some people say the chili dog (also known as the coney dog) was invented in Brooklyn by Greek immigrants around 1910, but there are a lot more people from Michigan and Texas who would claim otherwise, loudly and fervently. Since we don’t have a dog in that fight (pun intended), we’ll let you do your own research. What we can tell you is that there are few things more American or more fun than a chili dog and, no matter where you come from or how old you are, chances are you love them. This weekend, grab you a can of Blue Runner® Homestyle Chili Starter and a pair of grilling tongs and enjoy this backyard delicacy.
Prep/Stovetop: 20 minutes
Shake your can of Blue Runner Blue Runner® Homestyle Chili Starter before opening.
Brown the ground beef, then stir in the Blue Runner Homestyle Chili Base and two tablespoons of yellow mustard. Heat to a simmer, then cook 15 minutes to thicken and combine all the flavors.
Grill: 5 minutes
Next, place the hot dogs on the grill and cook until well-marked and heated through (about 2 minutes per side). Turn the heat off and toast the buns on the grill.
Put a hot dog in each bun and top with chili, cheddar cheese, and red onions, if desired.
